Nexus Authority: Gearhaven

Project Overview

Nexus Authority: Mission 001 – Gearhaven is a scenario-based e-learning experience designed to help middle school students plan an argumentative essay. Learners become Nexus Authority agents and travel through a portal to Gearhaven, a steampunk city debating whether artificial intelligence should replace traditional schools.

Throughout the mission, learners interview residents, analyze evidence, select a claim, develop reasons, address an opposing viewpoint, and complete an organized writing plan. The experience transforms the prewriting process into an interactive mission while providing structured support aligned with Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for argumentative writing.

The Instructional Challenge

Many middle school students struggle to move from understanding an argumentative prompt to creating a complete, logically organized writing plan. They may select evidence without connecting it to a reason, overlook the counterargument, or begin drafting before developing a clear structure.

Gearhaven was designed to break this complex process into smaller, purposeful decisions. The fictional mission gives each step a clear context while providing scaffolding without removing learner choice.
